God’s gift of a relationship is not severed by distance or death. The promise of heaven continues the theme that we are made to be together for eternity. In one of my favorite chapters, Psalm 139, God’s presence is always with us, forming each person in the womb, knowing our thoughts, and never leaving us alone (v.1-18). Two are better than one, and three are better as God becomes the third strand. But when wound together, the strand becomes much more difficult to tear apart. Solomon concluded in verse 12, “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Three strands unwound may be easy to break.

But when sin separated us from God’s presence, Jesus took our sin penalty to give us right standing with God and make it possible for us, God’s children, to dwell together forever. God’s design from the beginning was to dwell with His creation. Jesus prayed that this unity would be in the disciples and for all who were yet to become believers ( John 17:22-23). The three in one, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, share complete unity. The entire purpose of God in sending Jesus was to bring people into God’s family in the eternal Kingdom. Life on earth is to reflect the unity, love, and fellowship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When Jesus sent out the disciples to proclaim the gospel, he sent them out in pairs ( Mark 6:7) because two are better than one.

God’s plan from the beginning was the social network of people needing one another. “So that you too may have fellowship with us, and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ” ( 1 John 1:3). The disciples knew the relationship with Jesus on earth was the beginning of an eternal relationship promised by Jesus, “that you also may be where I am” ( John 14:2-3).įellowship between the apostles and God was part of a fruitful life. God desires that “all would come to repentance” ( 2 Peter 3:9). Stepping out of heaven to bring frail, lost people into Kingdom life, Jesus reflected God’s desire to be with His people.
